In past years we are experiencing a shift toward earlier diagnosis
of prostate cancer (PCa). The driving dynamics behind that are
twofold. On one hand there is a greater public awareness in
parallel to advancing professional insights, leading to the
adoption of (in)formal screening strategies. Hence, numerous
improved non-invasive enhanced diagnostic imaging modalities
have become available.
Traditionally the detection of PCa has been fuelled by prostatespecific antigen (PSA) and image-guided prostate tissue sampling.
A proactive attitude towards decreasing the threshold of
performing diagnostic investigations has led to an increase in
making the (early) diagnosis of PCa. Consequently, this has led to
an increase in the number of patients presenting with clinically
organ-confined PCa.
